The best of Edinburgh - What to see, eat and drink

We are just home from the best couple of days exploring Edinburgh city with our friends. This post "The best of Edinburgh - What to see, eat, and drink" is to help you plan the ultimate trip to Edinburgh, Scotland. We went in July and the weather was thankfully glorious but being Irish I am used to the weather basically being the luck of the draw all year around. Edinburgh has a little something for everyone and I must say it is the perfect location for a city trip.

Food, coffee, and treat spots in Edinburgh

  • Coffee from the Milkman Coffee - I popped in here for a takeaway coffee and wow I must say the place is just perfect. Amazing coffee, fresh pastries, and such a nice setting. If I lived in Edinburgh Id say I would live here :P
  • Brunch at the Little Larder - This is a cute brunch spot right beside the Royal Mile. It is so good there is pretty much always a demand but they don't rely on reservations so you can just pop by. This spot provides customers with yummy, seasonal and local food. Brunch was delish, highly recommend..I can see why they are referred to as the hidden gem near the Royal Mile.
    • Brunch at Greenwoods Edinburgh - A top-class Asian style restaurant that really has the wow factor. The perfect mix between Chinese and Indonesian flavours and an overall beautiful setting.
    • Coffee at Hideout Cafe - A really cute spot with delicious iced lattes for anyone on the hunt whilst walking the beautiful streets of Edinburgh. There is also seats for those wanting to take a coffee break.
    • MOO PIE Gelato - If you are looking for the best ice cream in Edinburgh you need to check out MOO PIE Gelato. There are also vegan options for those of you who are vegan.
    • Dinner at Hawksmoor - We reserved Hawksmoor for Sunday night's dinner and really liked it. I must say this is more of a fancy spot so if you just want fish and chips or something to keep you going this is more on the pricier side. If you are a fish or red meat fan I would 100% recommend it.

What to do with your time

    • Victoria Street - Victoria street is the street that inspired JK Rowling to create the famous Diagon Alley featured in Harry Potter. This colourful street is filled with lots of cute shops and is one to put on your list.
    • Johnny Walker rooftop bar + museum - I must say this was a pleasant surprise. You can reserve online to avoid disappointment but we just sat up sipping cocktails, eating a shared food board, and enjoying the view. We didn't visit the museum but if you are a whiskey/Johnnie Walker fan it looked the real deal.
    • A tour of Edinburgh Castle - Even if you are not a history fan Edinburgh castle is a must if you are visiting the city. A lot of people were disappointed as it was booked up for the day we visited, so do book your tickets in advance online.
    • Gin tasting at Edinburgh gin distillery - This was a highlight for me, especially being a big gin fan. We pre-booked the gin tasting experience online (linked here)
    • A whiskey tasting at the Scottish Whiskey experience - My friend and I are not whiskey fans so we skipped this one but the guys loved it! They are big whiskey lovers so they booked the gold ticket and loved it.
    • Greyfriars kirkyard - We walked around Greyfriars kirkyard in the sun which is where JK Rowling got her inspiration for some of the Harry Potter characters. If you are a HP fan this is one to visit.
    • Royal Mile - Our Airbnb was right on the Royal Mile so we walked through each day. Located in the Old Town, the Royal Mile features lots of bars, shops, and restaurants along with St Giles Cathedral.
    • Walk to Dean Village - This was such a beautiful little village a walk away from the city center. As you will see from the picture below it is a slice of heaven away from the busy city of Edinburgh.
    • Stroll down to the water - We had a bit of a locals tour which included a walk down by the Leith and a visit to Teuchters Landing bar. If you are a whiskey fan, they have a game where you throw rings around the bottles behind the bar and whatever it lands you can have a glass of ;).

    Where to grab a drink

    • Never Really Here, hidden bar (See Tiktok video here). A really cool, hidden bar with the most delicious, well crafted cocktails in the city. As you will see from the video you would really have no clue this is a bar from the outside which we loved. If you are a cocktail fan this is definitely one for you.
    • The Cold House Roof Top terrace - We were very lucky that the sun was out for the majority of our trip so this roof top was the perfect place to chill and have a drink (See Tiktok video of the roof top). The Cold House has a number of different bars inside including their pizza and prosecco restaurant which looked very nice too.
    • Johnnie Walker roof top  - Like I said above, this was a real pleasant surprise and the view is fab.
    • Festival Village Waverley - An outdoor area setup with food, drinks and live music, seven days a week (open 11am-10pm).
    • Finnegans Wake Irish pub - Live music every night and such a good pub atmosphere...You cant beat it.

I have to say I couldn't fault Edinburgh, there is a little something for everyone. I have also linked a couple of my TikToks for anyone who wants to see more of our trip.
